Big box stores. We all know them. They’re synonymous with sprawling aisles, bulk buys, and… well, often, a reputation for “cheap” materials. But here’s the thing: those same stores are treasure troves of potential, waiting to be unlocked for your home renovation.

I’ve personally tackled numerous projects using ‘big box’ finds, and I’m here to tell you, the results can be anything but basic.

Let’s ditch the stigma and dive into some “out of the box” ideas I’ve used to elevate my own home renovations.

Elevate Your Wellness

Investing in a home gym can be a smart long-term decision. While there’s an upfront cost, it can quickly offset the expense of monthly gym memberships and spa visits.

Consider adding a steam shower, incorporating stylish and functional gym equipment, and selecting furniture that creates a cohesive and inviting atmosphere.

Don’t forget storage for towels and other yoga mats. By focusing on a chic and intentional design, you can transform any space, even a garage or basement, into a luxurious and rejuvenating retreat right at home.

Achieve the Aesthetic:

Creating a home spa offers numerous benefits, including cost savings, convenience, and privacy. Modern pre-fabricated saunas are now readily available, making it easier than ever to add this luxurious amenity to your home spa.

By incorporating a sauna, you can transform any space, from a dedicated room into a personal oasis of wellness and relaxation.

Your front door is the first impression guests and potential buyers have of your home, making it crucial for creating a welcoming and inviting atmosphere. Don’t let a tired or outdated entryway diminish your home’s appeal.

Consider updating your exterior or interior door with a fresh coat of paint, new hardware, or even a complete door replacement to instantly enhance your home’s curb appeal and create a lasting impression.

Design for Entertaining: A Space to Keep Any Party Going

Transform your home into the ultimate entertainment hub with a few key design choices. Whether you envision a dedicated home theater for movie nights, a wet bar, or a nook for wine tastings, creating a space that invites friends and family to gather is easier than you might think, without a custom design.

Achieve the Aesthetic:

Paint & Plaster Hacks

Another cost-saving strategy we employed was using limewash paint for our 23-foot tall fireplace. We initially looked into a stone or tile facade but were met with sticker shock from the quotes. Our painter suggested limewash, and it was a game-changer.

The layered application created a subtle variations in texture, achieving the cohesive and modern concrete look we desired at a fraction of the cost. Venetian plaster and wallpaper were also key in saving money for multiple renovations.

Fire pits are a fantastic way to transform your outdoor space into a cozy gathering spot, perfect for evenings spent with friends and family. Best of all, they require no installation, making them an easy and budget-friendly upgrade for any home; including apartment balconies, try a tabletop fireplace.

Achieve the Aesthetic:

Plunge Pools

Living in California, we dreamed of a pool, but our sloped backyard presented a huge challenge. Retaining walls were more expensive then the pool itself, so we explored alternatives and discovered plunge pools. These compact pools offer a fantastic way to create a backyard oasis without extensive landscaping, and modern technology means they come with all the features of a traditional pool or hot tub.
